2009 Reading Competition

The TRC Library organized the National Reading Competition for Form B students in August at ECOL.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage Basotho students to cultivate the culture of reading. More than 30 students from different high schools throughout the country took part in this competition for the title of the National Reading Champion.

Each student read a short passage from a book of his or her choice. This was followed by a surprise text for all from a book chosen by TRC. A panel of judges determined the best reader based on reading techniques and a presentation style designed by TRC.

The winner Naomi from Methodist High School got a prize of M1, 000 while the second runner-up walked away with M800 and the third M500. Certificates were also awarded to al participants.

TRC values reading as an important skill that should be nurtured among students as this will enhance attainment of good results in examinations. It therefore felt the need to contribute to inject the spirit of reading among students through initiatives of this nature. This endeavour is also meant to support the efforts of the Ministry of Education and high school teachers.

The Competition, launched in 2005 to unprecedented success, has been embraced by many Secondary and High Schools across the country as a valuable effort to strengthen readership among students. It is hoped that this contest will continue to revive the love for reading as well as help students acquire knowledge better.
