HEADS OF DEPT. TO ATTEND ENVIRONMENT BILL W/SHOP

The Botha-Bothe District Environment Office will hold a two day Environment Bill 2007 and Biosafety Bill workshop for Heads of Department to be held at Likileng Lodge from December 2.

The Botha-Bothe District Administration Manager, Mr. Ramabanta Majoro said the Environment and Biosafety Bills are developed by the department of Environment to safeguard the environment through development of laws and policies.

Mr. Majoro, said the objective of the workshop is to discuss contents entailed in the bills and what is expected of the participants to help in implementing the bills.

He said, Biosafety Bill has been drafted to implement the Biosafety Protocol and to bring about some of the weaknesses and deficiencies of the Biosafety Protocol.

He said, "the Protocol is an international environment agreement designed to regulate the cross border movement of indigenous plants with the objective of avoiding harm to biodiversity."

On the other hand, Mr. Majoro said, the Environment Bill will take care of factors that contribute to Lesotho’s environmental challenges such as periodic droughts, and population pressures forcing settlements in undeveloped areas.

He said, the challenges also include overgrazing, severe soil erosion and soil exhaustion and desertification.

This is the first workshop of its nature to be held in the district.
