Public hearing at Khanyetsi and Makhalaneng

Public gathering held at Ha Khanyetsi in Makhalaneng Community Council, in the district of Maseru, this place is at the rural areas of Maseru .

The main objective of this public gathering was to make the members of the community to understand democracy, human rights and how they should participate in their community work to ensure developments in their area. The purpose of this public gathering is relevant to the goal of Democracy and Human rights programme which is to focus on civic education for citizen empowerment, giving them information and training to be active participants in the affairs of their country, teaching people about parliament and how they can participate in parliamentary affairs.

Not many people were involved in this public gathering because of bad weather conditions, sizzling snow wind and heavy rains, even though it looked like the message for the public gathering was well passed, at the end only 17 males and 8 females were able to attend. There were no young people attending. The chief of the village, 'Mampinane Khanyetsi was present with the councilor and was the one who made opening speech. Because of the bad weather conditions, issues that were planned to be talked about were not all emphasized, for example the Lesotho constitution and three parts which are Judiciary, Legislature and Executive.

The main critical was the issue of Local Government, which is critical because the country of Lesotho is approaching Local government elections in 2010, and people need to start preparing themselves for elections, and they need to know how to get the best out of elections, like electing the candidate they know has good leadership skills, that when the money is allocated for the Local Government Community Councils, the government looks at how many people went to elections, and the population of that village is regarded to be people who went for elections.

People were made aware of the duties and responsibilities of the councilors from allocation of land, control of markets, making sure that there is clean.
