LGNSP EMBARKS ON GOVERNANCE NEEDS ASSESSMENT

The Transformation Resource Centre (TRC) and the Local Governance and Non-State Actors Support Programme (LGNSP) are engaged in a governance needs assessment in Leribe, Botha-Bothe and Mokhotlong districts.

The TRC Democracy Educator, Mrs Mookho Mphats'oe-Mankitane, said that the assessment, which is expected to be completed by March this year, will end with a workshop hosted jointly with all the stakeholders at district level, to validate the results.

In Leribe, TRC and LGNSP have selected Linare, Senyane and Seshote community councils to represent low lands, foothills and highlands respectively, to have a general view of the whole district.

Before the two organizations could embark on the implementation of development activities in a district, they need to get an overview progress of local government- strengths and weaknesses for such activities to be successful.

The assessment focuses on capacity development and the improvement of service delivery of government and non governmental organizations as defined by government.

The Assistant Economic Planner in Leribe, Mr Bulane Lekoete said the assessment will assist in the improvement of service delivery as well as to empower the community councilors and chiefs in their day to day work.
He said that one of the outstanding things to be gained during the assessment, will be the establishment of community and district council profiles, which are expected to show the overall needs of the district.

LGNSP has been launched by the Lesotho government in partnership with the European Union. Among others, it aims at strengthening the local government structures at district and community level through a wide range of capacity building efforts.
