The end of Apartheid in 1994 spelt a new era in the work of TRC. Like all other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Lesotho we were affected financially. TRC decided to abandon its regional focus for an internal one. Many challenges were waiting in the country: democracy education, the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), and conflict management.

The TRC of today is a vibrant NGO with four main projects: the Library, the Democracy project, the Water Project and Work for Justice.

The Library has broadened its variety of media from books to periodicals, newspapers and audio-visual material such as videos and DVDs. In the computerized catalogue 4000 books are listed.

The two team members responsible for the Democracy Project hold workshops for teachers on education for democracy in the classroom, the constitution, and voter education. Educational material such as a simplified version of the constitution are being developed on a regular basis. At present the upcoming elections for Local Government have proved another important task for the project in assisting the government with the preparations.

The Water Project focuses on the effects of the dam constructions under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Two field workers help the affected communities to enable them to express their needs. TRC also monitors the resettlement process. With the official inauguration of the Mohale Dam in March, TRC`s work is not over. There are still issues on compensation that have to be settled. Furthermore, the Lowlands Water Scheme will be a new task for us.

Work for Justice is currently being developed into TRC`s communication and information department. The core of this work still is the quarterly newsletter Work for Justice. Developing a media policy and a website are the upcoming tasks.
